TITANIUM ATTEMPT
Welding On Cable Stops,  and Water Bottle Mounts

By James Morikawa

I thought welding on the cable stops was going to be "a piece of cake".

Picture

The first cable stop was a disaster.  The open end of the cable-stop deformed,  and I attempted a repair,  but that only made things worst.
I'm proud to rate my first cablestop weld as "very bad, and ugly".

Welding on the headtube cable stops went OK.  I was getting better at it,  but "not better enough".

Here's a thought on the above picture.  Note the headtube welds.  There's a lot of weld undercutting.  I'm not too proud of it.  I think this is one reason why most framebuilders advised me to use the double pass weld methed.  Being that Argon prices  skyrocketed on me I wanted to economise on Argon —  Do the frame single pass and "burn up" less
argon.   Maybe,  not a good thought?  My next attempt will be done double pass.   I will forfiet the high cost of argon.

For the water bottle mounts I used some titanium cap crews.  I just flipped them over and welded the heads to the tube.  Just using them as a experiment to see how they will hold up under real life cycle riding.  Also,  it was good welding practice.

That's all I got to write.  Tired.  Going to bathe, and get some restful sleep . . .
